Rudiments: paradiddle and flam

Two patterns that sound like real drumming.

Single paradiddle

Right, left, right, right. Left, right, left, left. The name comes from how it sounds: “par-a-did-dle.”

It switches which hand starts. That makes it a very useful pattern for fills and grooves.

RLRRLRLL

R = right hand, L = left hand. Lowercase small letters are soft “grace” notes. You'll hear left in your left ear and right in your right ear with headphones.

Flam

A flam is two notes almost at the same time: a soft grace note, then a main note with the other hand.

The small letters are the quiet grace notes. Hold the grace stick low and the main stick high.

lRrLlRrL

R = right hand, L = left hand. Lowercase small letters are soft “grace” notes. You'll hear left in your left ear and right in your right ear with headphones.

Wear headphones to hear left and right separately.
